La Villarroel premieres Grand Canyon, the new success of Catalan playwriting

16/07/2025

Grand Canyon, written by Sergi Pompermayer, has premiered at La Villarroel as part of the Grec Festival of Barcelona. The play is the second of the Barcelona-born author’s “American stories,” following the success of Amèrica, which also premiered at the Eixample venue in December 2022 and, due to its critical and public acclaim, returned for a second run the following season.

Grand Canyon is directed by Pere Arquillué, marking his second foray into directing this year after the premiere of Un déu salvatge at Teatre Goya. The production stars Joan Carreras, one of the most highly regarded actors in the Catalan theatre scene, joined on stage by an exceptional cast including Mireia Aixalà, Guillem Balart, Maria Morera, Eduard Buch, and Mar Pawlowski.

In Grand Canyon, we meet Pere, a man in his fifties who once dreamed of becoming a rock star but now makes a living doing repairs on farms and houses, having never fulfilled any of his dreams. One of those dreams was to travel Route 66 all the way to the Grand Canyon with his wife and daughter—a dream he believes will now never come true. But an unexpected visit makes him realize that not all is lost, and that even the smallest thing can bring down what seems immense and pave the way for those who come after.
