Grup Focus renews the artistic leadership of Teatre Romea and La Villarroel for the 2027-2028 season
Grup Focus has announced a new chapter in the artistic leadership of its theatres for the 2027-2028 season. Tania Brenlle will assume the artistic direction of Teatre Romea, while Carme Tierz will take over the leadership of La Villarroel, in a move that underscores the continuity of their artistic projects and a commitment to generational renewal within the group.
This transition marks the conclusion of Josep Maria Pou’s tenure at the helm of the Romea after seven seasons leading its programming and artistic vision. During this period, the theatre has strengthened its position as one of the leading venues in the Catalan performing arts scene, with a programme grounded in artistic excellence, the power of great texts, and dialogue between creators and audiences.
Pou will remain closely linked to Grup Focus as Artistic Ambassador of the Romea, a newly created role through which he will help identify emerging creators, artistic trends, and collaboration opportunities both nationally and internationally, further strengthening the group’s connection with contemporary artistic creation.
The succession at the Romea will be led by Tania Brenlle, who until now has served as Artistic Director of La Villarroel. With extensive experience in production, cultural management and international co-productions, Brenlle has led the venue’s artistic project over the past decade, consolidating its reputation as a key platform for contemporary playwriting and Catalan authorship. At the Romea, her artistic vision will combine the legacy of great texts and playwrights with a strong commitment to new voices and contemporary stage languages.
Meanwhile, Carme Tierz will succeed Brenlle at La Villarroel. Currently Head of Theatrical Distribution at Grup Focus and Artistic Director of the RBLS Festival Teatre Jove, Tierz brings with her a long career in cultural journalism and the promotion of the performing arts. Her mission will be to continue strengthening La Villarroel as a platform for contemporary playwriting, living authorship and emerging talent within the Catalan theatre scene.
With these appointments, Grup Focus reaffirms its commitment to combining experience and renewal in order to continue promoting ambitious, diverse artistic projects that are deeply connected to the cultural challenges of our time.
